I’ll take the high road and you take the low road. And I’ll be in Scotland before you… Diese Phrase löst bei mir unzählige glückliche Erinnerungen und Emotionen an meine Zeit in Schottland aus. Von meiner ersten Reise, die ich quasi „allein“ gemeistert habe (ohne Eltern), viel Regen, gemütlichen Abenden im Zelt und meinem ersten (nicht ganz legalen) Bier. 2008 war ich in Schottland, zusammen mit knapp 30 anderen Kindern, Jugendlichen und ein paar Erwachsenen sind wir mit einem gigantischen blau-weiss-gestreiften Zelt und einem Bus samt Anhänger über Belgien und Luxemburg nach England und Schottland gefahren. Die Zeit war wirklich sehr schön und ich denke gern daran zurück und irgendwie habe ich Schottland wirklich in mein Herz geschlossen. Trotz dem vielen Regen und dem teilweise schwierigen Akzent (den ich lustigerweise aber verstehe, ich bin schließlich ein Geordie-Girl). Ein Ort war schöner als der andere und die will ich hier mit euch teilen. Hier meine schönsten Orte in Scotland. Übrigens: während ich das hier schreibe höre ich Dudelsack-Musik und muss lächeln weil mir tausend Dinge einfallen die ich sofort aufschreiben muss.
Scourie
Schon auf dem Weg dorthin mussten wir mehrmals anhalten weil es einfach zu schön ist um einfach daran vorbeizufahren. Teilweise ist der Sand so weiß wie in der Karibik, so schön dass ich immer noch ein Glas davon in meinem Zimmer hier in Wien stehen habe.
Scourie ist ein kleiner Ort an der Nord-West-Küste Schottlands. Das Wasser ist eiskalt, was uns aber nicht davon abgehalten hat trotzdem reinzuspringen. Es gibt ein kleines Hotel und einen Campingplatz und ist wirklich einer meiner Lieblingsplätze. Den kleinen Wanderweg entlang geht, über den Zaun für die Schafe klettert und dann auf den Felsen sitzt und nur mehr der Atlantik vor einem ist…das ist mein Lieblingsplatz. Nichts ist mehr vor euch, es ist ganz still und ihr schaut nur aufs Wasser hinaus, eingekuschelt in einem großen Kapuzenpullover und schaut einfach nur. Mehr braucht es nicht.

John o‘ Groats
Der nördlichste Teil Schottlands ist auch dementsprechend kalt und windig. Aber das ist einfach ein Ort den man gesehen haben muss. Außer einem Hotel, einem kleinen Shop, dem Campingplatz und dem Hafen gibt es nicht viel. Wenn man mit dem Boot rausfährt, sieht man wo die Nordsee und der Atlantik aufeinandertreffen, es gibt sogar einen kleinen Höhenunterschied und die Wellen sind ziemlich heftig.

Glen Coe
Wenn ich an Schottland denke, kommen mir Bilder von hügeligen Landschaften, Tälern und Regenschleier in den Kopf. Glen Coe ist genau so ein Tal und hier durchzufahren ist wirklich empfehlenswert. Die Stimmung ist einfach was ganz besonderes und romantisch. Vor allem wenn man dann die alten Geschichten zu den Orten kennt: die Rivalität zwischen dem McDonalds-Clan und dem Campell-Clan und die blutigen Geschichten um das Massaker von Glen Coe. Übrigens: auch zu empfehlen ist das Culloden Battlefield in der Nähe von Inverness. Geschlafen haben wir in Glen Coe übrigens am Campingplatz von Fort William.
North Berwick
Die kleine Stadt hat auch einen wirklich schönen Strand. Zwar nicht ganz so weiß wie auf dem Weg nach Scourie, aber North Berwick ist auch bewohnter und so kann man hier auch perfekt mal einen Abend im Pub verbringen. Da die Stadt nur 40 km von Edinburgh entfernt ist, ist sie perfekt für einen kleinen Nachmittagsausflug. Übrigens: von einem kleinen Hügel hat man eine fantastische Aussicht!

Immer der Nase nach
Die schönsten Orte findet man dann meistens wenn man einfach losfährt und sich ein wenig Zeit lässt um die Landschaft zu genießen. Und in Schottland sollte man sich definitiv viel Zeit nehmen. Habt ihr noch Tips für mich? Ich komme bestimmt bald wieder dorthin.

It was my first journey I did „alone“ (without my parents), a lots of rain, cozy evenings in the tent and my first (not so legal) bear. In 2008 I was in Scotland with 30 other children and teenager and a few adults and a huge blue-white-striped tent and a bus plus hanger we drove over Belgium and Luxemburg to England and Scotland.. The time was amazing and I really enjoy thinking back on it. Although we had lots of rain and this accent, wich is a little bit hard to understand (but not for me, I’m a Gordie-girl). One place was more stunning then the next and here I want to share them with you. So here are my favorite spots in Scotland. By the way: While I’m writing this, I’m listening to backpipes-music and I’m smiling, because with it I get 1000 things I have to write down for you.
Scourie
The road to Scourie is stunning, you have to stop a lot of times because it’s too beautiful to drive on. Sometimes the sand of the beach is so white as in the caribbean, it’s so beautiful that I’m still having a glas of it in my flat here in Vienna.
Scourie is a small village at the north-west coast of Scotland. The water is freezing, but we had to jump in it. There is a small hotel and a camp site and this place is really my favourite place. When you walk along the trail and climb over the fence for the sheeps and sit on the rocks and there is nothing in front of you and the ocean…this is my happy place. It’s so quiet and you can’t stop looking at the sea, snug and cozy in a huge sweater. I don’t need more than this.

John o‘ Groats
It’s the northernmost place in Scotland and to that effect really cold and windy. But it it a place you have to see. There is only a hotel, a little shop, the camp site and the harbour. When you move out with a boat, you can see where the north sea and the atlantic cross together, there is a little height differential and the waves are really strong.

Glen Coe
When I’m thinking of Scotland, I see pictures of hilly landscapes, valleys and rain clouds. Glen Coe is such a valley and you really have to drive by here. We stopped also in Fort Williams for sleeping. The atmosphere is really special and romantic. And when you know the stories about this area, it’s even better: the fights between the McDonalds-Clan and the Campbell-Clan and the masker from Glen Coe. By the way: You also can stop at the Culloden Battlefield near Inverness!
North Berwick
This little town has also a really nice beach. Not that white as on the way to Scourie, but North Berwick is more lived-in and so it’s perfect for an evening in a pub. North Berwick is only 40 km away from Edinburgh, so it’s perfect for a little trip. By the way: from the little hill you have an amazing view over the sea and the city.

Follow your nose
When you just go and take your time and enjoy the landscape, you will find the most beautiful spots. And here in Scotland, you should definitely take your time. Do you have more tips for me? I’m coming back soon, for sure.
